Dusts of Avalon cover

Description

Last night, I made a cover for my NaNoWriMo novel. Today, I'm frigging done. 52071 words of utter l33tness. Yay. Didn't turn out to be exactly as awesome novel as I thought it would be (well, it got to the wordcount, but I obviously didn't have time for editing), but at least it's plot-compete. I'll keep fixing it. I'll so keep fixing it. =)

The actual text will be out in a few days. I'm currently preparing a nice huge PDF. UPDATE: for your reading "pleasure", I present you Dusts of Avalon. Enjoy!

But in the meantime, here's the cover! Meet Lt. Michelle Daleworth and Dr. Paul Grovepath, the two protagonists, looking at a curious space station.

Story time: I originally got the idea for the novel from Good Show Sir's post on frigging epic Arthurian SF covers. For the cover, I was kind of inspired by the stint to Finland where someone pointed out cheesy covers from Jalava. I was, like, "oh my God, that cover of Harry Harrison's Make Room! Make Room! was awesome when I was a kid." Like all great literature nations, Finland has awesome cover artists. We also have a lot of not so awesome cover artists. But we like them all! It's the spirit that counts! =)

So... here's my super-cheesy and done mostly focusing on fulfilling the deadline rather than any quality standard type of cover for the novel. All within the spirit of NaNoWriMo! ...I actually wanted to add l33t 3D backdrop and stuff, but that has to wait until the final version of the novel. It will be awesome. It could also feature actually sensible anatomy. =)

Inked on paper. Scan and eventual crop in GIMP. Coloured on MyPaint. Texts and PDF conversion for TeX inclusion in Inkscape.

I really like the font design. Nice contrast between the the thin modern letters in "Dusts of" and the more semi-Gothic letters in Avalon.
